Students get in the spirit of Homecoming ’97

A batch of colorfully painted squares named Victory Lane lies near Jack Trice Stadium.

Victory Lane was painted Sunday from noon until about 6 p.m.

“It’s to fire up fans and players and the students painting it themselves,” said Bryan Burkhardt, chairman for the Homecoming committee.

“We had a good time. We were there from 1:30 or 2 until a little after 3. It was great, a good way to spend a Sunday afternoon,” said Rachel Smith, social chair for the Richardson Court Association.

People or organizations chose a four-by-four white-washed block to paint a design on, Burkhardt said. People could paint it any way they wanted, and the paint and brushes were provided.

Yell Like Hell, a greek activity in preparation for Homecoming, was taking place at the same time not far from Victory Lane.

They encouraged each other, Burkhardt said. There was also free pizza and pop for painting participants.

Reservations were not necessary, though groups could reserve a space if they wanted to, Burkhardt said. RCA had a contest for their design, and the winning one was painted, Smith said.

“A lot of spirit was represented,” Smith said. “[It seems there are lots of] artists in the university.”

There were some alumni who expressed an interest and sent designs for Victory Lane as well, Burkhardt said.

There was no set theme — anything could be painted as long as it was encouragement for the Cyclones, Burkhardt said. The Homecoming Central Committee cast votes to pick a winning design for recognition.

“Many a person comes back with paint on their faces or hands,” Burkhardt said.
