As one street opens, another closes

As the summer continues, so does construction.

Construction began Monday north of the Memorial Union on Union Drive, the same day Hyland Avenue opened for traffic.

Rick Fox, landscape architect for Facilities Planning and Management at Iowa State, said the gate at the northwest corner of the Union will be removed and a new asphalt surface will be laid.

“The buses have really torn up the pavement,” Fox said.

In addition to the repavement, Fox said there will be curb, sidewalk and gutter work being done in front of the Union.

“Work will begin at the location where the access gate was located,” he said.

The construction, Fox said, will continue east along Union Drive to the front of the fountain along the south lane.

Buses will use the north lane during the repavement, so the road work will not affect bus traffic greatly. He said the bus routes will not change, but the MU bus stop will be moved to the east end of the construction site, rather than in front of the fountain.

Fox said the construction will have a heavier impact on the pedestrians.

“It will affect people trying to access campus from this location,” he said.

Fox said the road work on Union Drive will be completed by July 22.

As Union Drive construction finishes, the repavement of Bissell Road will start. Fox said the entire length of the road will be resurfaced, but the work shouldn’t slow down traffic.

“It is a four-lane road, so traffic will be maintained,” he said.

The repavement of Bissell Road will be finished by the first week of August, Fox said.

“Most of the work should be done by the time students come back,” he said. “At least that is our goal.”

Hyland Avenue was reopened by the City of Ames between 13th St. and Ontario St. and the Oakland-Sheldon intersection Monday morning.

“The streets have been widened a lot,” said Jerry Byg, municipal engineer for Ames Public Works.

Byg said Hyland Avenue was widened from 31 feet to 48 feet. The street’s width was changed in order to accommodate new bike trails and more traffic.

“The construction is not completely done,” Byg said.

He said although the road is now open to traffic, other features of the project must be completed before the job is entirely finished.

Additional landscaping, Byg said, needs to be finished and markings on the street have yet to be completed.

“The markings will be put on the street during the fall,” he said.

The reopening will also allow northwest traffic to use the Pammel Drive hill adjacent to the Iowa State cemetery.

Hyland Avenue has been under construction since April 1.
