On Big Monday, it was only fitting that No. 24 Iowa State and No. 9 Kansas put on a show. In the end, though, the Jayhawks held serve on their home court, beating Iowa State 80-76.

The Cyclones and Jayhawks started out fast-paced, with the under-16 timeout coming with 12:53 to play in the first half. Iowa State led Kansas 16-11, on the back of strong play from Marial Shayok and Talen Horton-Tucker on the offensive end.

With under four minutes to play in the first half, Iowa State held a 37-31 lead. Horton-Tucker was impressive in his first trip to Allen Fieldhouse, scoring 13 points to pace the Cyclones. With 20 minutes gone, the Cyclones led Kansas 42-37.

Iowa State shot 53.1 percent in the first half, while Kansas shot 47 percent from the floor.

Kansas kept the game close by leaning on big man Dedric Lawson. Lawson was active on the offensive glass for the Jayhawks, grabbing seven offensive rebounds and leading to a small Kansas advantage in second-chance points.

After going up 53-47, the Cyclones gave up a 14-0 run to the Jayhawks and never reclaimed the lead. Iowa State struggled mightily from the free throw line, shooting 10-of-17 and whiffing at opportunities to get back into the game.

Iowa State kept itself in the game late, but wasn’t able to pull off a sweep of the Jayhawks.

Up next for Iowa State is a trip to Ole Miss on Saturday in the Big 12/SEC Challenge.
