Tennis anyone?

If these cold blustery days make you long for a few rounds of tennis, then join the Iowa State women’s tennis team at Pro Am on Friday, Dec. 8.

The event will be held in the Ames Racquet and Fitness Center from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m.

The Cyclone players will be conducting a clinic for juniors, while ISU head tennis coach Michele Conlon will hold one for adults.

“It’s a fun event,” Conlon said.

The junior clinic has 40 kids signed up presently, ranging from ages six to 15 years old.

Conlon and company will be focusing on tennis basics such as target hitting and serving, Conlon said.

A special feature in the junior clinic will be a radar gun to gauge the serves in the fast-serve contest.

Adults who sign up are invited to take on the challenge of two members of the Cylcone team in a doubles match. The matches should last for about 30 minutes.

“It’s a great time. We’re just out for fun,” Conlon said.

This is the fifth year that the team has put on the annual event, and it is usually enjoyed by both the players and the participants, she said.

The Cyclone team plans the event during their off-season, as it falls between November, which is the end of their fall season, and February, when their spring competition begins.

“It’ s kind of fun for the players to have some fun, more relaxing games after their fall season,” junior Angie Miller said. “We use the club so much, so it’s nice to get to know the members here.”

The event also gives fans the opportunity to get involved with Cyclone players.

“When the kids get an opportunity to play on the same court with the ISU players, it often builds good relations between the families and the team members,” Conlon said. “It definitely establishes interest in our program.

“It also gives people a better idea of the caliber of player that we have here,” she said.

Miller agreed that it improved relations with the members of the tennis club.

“They often ask the team members how the season is going or whether they won their last match,” she said.

Admission to the event is free of charge. Raffle prizes, free pizza and beverages will also be provided.
