Soccer team suffers two losses

They say that numbers never lie, but according to Iowa State soccer player Dawn Weber the numbers in their soccer scores this weekend didn’t truly reflect how the team played.

Iowa State’s soccer team suffered two tough losses this weekend against Nebraska and Florida State. The Huskers took the game with a score of 4-0, while the Seminoles won 4-1. Weber, a sophomore from Colorado, was the sole goal-scorer for the Cyclones.

Even though the scores didn’t show it, the ISU team played one of their toughest games ever, Weber said.

“We played a tough fought game. We wanted to win, but our inexperience showed through,” she said.

The Cyclones held Nebraska, 1-0, all through the first half of the game, but in the second half the Huskers took control. While Nebraska had a record-setting 60 shots on goal, the ISU team could not manage to get even one.

“That took a lot of wind out of our sails,” Weber said.

Nebraska is a second year program which is used to playing against rough competition, and that made them a difficult team to play, she said.

Against Florida State the Cyclones fared a little better. Starting out strong, ISU was 1-1 after the first half, but let down in the second half of the game while the Seminoles to get the best of them.

“We played incredibly strong during the first half of the game, and we knew we had to keep up the intensity,” Weber said.

Florida State capitalized on their mistakes, she said. Although Weber scored one goal, it was a penalty kick, and the Cyclones had only five shots on goal. Megan O’Leary, a sophomore from St. Paul, had three of the attempts.

Goalkeeper Lauren Muser had seven saves against the Seminoles, who had 26 shots on goal.

The loss could be contributed to location. According to Weber, it makes a big difference to the team when they play at home. Considering their record, the home games seem to be more successful.

The Cyclones’ conference record is now 1-6, and the players and coaches are looking forward to being back on their home field this weekend.

“Let’s keep our home stands undefeated,” Weber said.
