Homecoming offers new events

Homecoming 1995 is coming soon to the Iowa State campus and will feature many new events.

Several events will mark this year’s celebration, beginning Saturday, Oct. 14 and running through Oct. 21.

The Homecoming Committee, in cooperation with the Student Alumni Association, has been planning the celebration since the beginning of last March.

Homecoming buttons will go on sale Oct. 6 at the SAA office, located next to the parking ramp in the Alumni Suite of the Memorial Union. A booth at the MU will also have buttons available from Oct. 17-19.

Angela Ervolino, Homecoming 1995 general co-chair, said perks accompany the buttons. At homecoming activities with charges, a discount will be given to students who wear buttons.

The Ames area also benefits from homecoming. Throughout the week, students will be completing community service projects.

Ervolino said there are 40 to 50 projects to choose from. Last year, volunteers built a playground at Sawyer School in Ames.

“It started because we wanted to give something back to the community,” she said. “You don’t need a lawn. You just need good people and a good attitude.”

The first official event will be flag football, volleyball, mud volleyball, bowling, basketball, pool and darts tournaments on Saturday, Oct. 14. A road race for runners, bicyclists and in-line skaters will also be held.

Ervolino said the committee planned a variety of tournaments so that students would not have to find a big group to participate.

On Sunday, Oct. 15, from 1-6 p.m., the painting of victory lane will take place on a parking lot strip in front of the Olsen Building. The concrete is whitewashed and divided into squares. Paint will be provided to all those interested.

Last year, Ervolino said, students put in a lot of effort painting, but no prizes were offered. This year a trophy will be given to whoever paints the best square.

A free meal will also be provided. KCCQ radio station and Yell-Like-Hell participants will be present to entertain students.

A barbecue on central campus will be held on Wednesday from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Ervolino said there may be a $1-2 cost. Wednesday night, Campustown will host “A Night on the Town” from 8:30 p.m. to 2 a.m. Students of all ages will be able to get into People’s, Lumpy’s, The Dean’s List and Tazzles with only one cover charge. Bands will be performing at the bars.

The annual Step-Off will begin at 6 p.m. on Friday. The ISU Marching Band, the football cheerleaders and the pom squad will start the trek from the Music Hall to the pep rally. However, Ervolino said, everyone is invited to participate.

The Step-Off route will go through Friley Hall, to Welch Avenue, to Towers, over to Lynn Avenue, through RCA and back up to central campus for the pep rally, which begins at 7 p.m.

Carriage rides will be offered at the MU on Friday night from 8:30 p.m. until 1 a.m. Ervolino said mass campaniling will begin at midnight so students can become “true Iowa Staters” by being kissed under the campanile.

There will also be competitions for the best banners and “spirit sheets.” Ervolino said the banners are usually displayed in Cyclone Stadium, but this year they will be hanging on the DOT building, near Target on Lincoln Way. Finally, the week will end with the football game against Colorado on Saturday, Oct. 21. Kick-off is at noon.

Students who have questions or want to participate in the tournaments can call the Homecoming Office at 294-0198.
