For many students at Iowa State heading home may be a tough time. The “Life Hack: Lgbtqia+ and Going Home for Break” event may help some students prepare for that time. The event will take place at the Center for LGBTQIA+ Student Success from 1 to 2:30 p.m.

Fallyn Lee, doctoral intern at ISU’s Student Counseling Services said the event is open to any LGBTQIA+ students “who may be returning to unsupportive environments during the winter break.”

The event is hosted by the Center for LGBTQIA+ Student Success and facilitated by Fallyn Lee, a doctoral intern at Student Counseling Services.

“This workshop will share coping skills for LGBTQIA+ students spending breaks with unsupportive family and/or home community. Whether you are stressed about having to head “back into the closet” when you visit family, or, you are out but going home isn’t awesome, we have some simple tools you can use,” according to the event’s Facebook page.

The Facebook page also stated that a member of Student Counseling Services will walk participants through “difficult situations at home.”

“This event will discuss some tips and skills students can use to care for themselves during this upcoming break,” Lee said. “We will explore some emotion regulation skills and provide psychoeducational resources to students who may feel emotionally unprepared for the upcoming break. We hope to start a conversation about the importance of self-care and mental health during a potentially stressful time.”
