Iowa State goes 2-1 in three-game series against Texas Tech

The Iowa State softball team competed against Texas Tech in Big 12 conference play in Lubbock, Texas.

The team finished 2-1, its best Big 12 conference matchup record of the year.

The Cyclones grabbed two wins against Texas Tech, its two first Big 12 conference wins of the season.

Cyclones grab first wins in Big 12 conference

Iowa State had a rough start when Big 12 conference play started.

The Cyclones are 2-11 in the Big 12 after losing multiple Big 12 matchups consecutively over the past month.

No. 1 Oklahoma, No. 11 Oklahoma State and No. 7 Texas gave Iowa State a rough start and the Cyclones were finally able to grab two wins against Texas Tech this past weekend.

The team went 2-1 against Texas Tech, beating them on Friday 4-1 and winning again on Saturday 6-3 but falling short on Sunday, losing 2-3.

Home runs are a big deal

Mikayla Ramos stepped up to the plate during the second game and hit her 12th home rub of the season, which tied her for the fifth-most in a single season in program history.

Kasey Simpson hit her first home run of the season during the second game, a solo shot to left-center field.

Simpson is now the 11th different Cyclones to hit a home run this season.

Milaysia Ochoa hit her fifth home run of the season during the second game and was the third home run of the game against Texas Tech.

Cyclones offense started out strong

The Cyclones grabbed a 1-0 lead in the first game of the series against Texas Tech.

Kali Gose earned a lead-off walk in the opening inning and scored the game’s first run on a dropped third strike.

Sami Williams was able to get the offense going with a one-out base hit in the top of the first inning during the second game against Texas Tech.

Ochoa had a two-out rally in the top of the fifth inning during the series finale to help Iowa State to take a short-lived lead. She singled through the right side, stole second base and was able to score.
