Letter to the editor: Iowa State athletics’ sponsorship gone too far

Jason Follett

Corporate sponsorship of athletics is nothing new. Some become endured like Principal Park while others become beloved like Wrigley Field.

So when Iowa State Athletics announced a sponsorship for the playing surface at Jack Trice Stadium, I imagined subtle changes like those used in Hilton Coliseum for decades with Pioneer’s sponsorship.

This held true until this past week when new graphics were added to the north scoreboard. The focus with this new graphic clearly shifts from honoring and celebrating Jack Trice, which was a decades-long, hard-fought battle by Cyclone faithful which became fruition in 1997, to one where corporate is king.

Thus, I would encourage Iowa State Athletics to return the previous I-State graphic and tastefully add to it the sponsorship like you have done in other areas of Jack Trice Stadium. In the same vein, it should be called Jack Trice Stadium-MidAmerican Energy Field instead of MidAmerican Energy Field at Jack Trice Stadium to properly focus who Iowa State is proud to honor and celebrate.
