A loaded gun was found in a student’s backpack at Ames High School on Friday afternoon. Police arrested the student after the school administration located the gun and safely removed it from the student’s backpack.

The school did not have to go under lockdown. Sgt. Amber Christian of the Ames Police Department said, as of now, there is no knowledge of an intent to use the Taurus 9mm handgun. 

Tae-Shyne Michael, 18, was arrested for carrying a weapon on school grounds, which is a class D felony. He was also charged with trafficking a stolen weapon. Christian said the department does not know who owned the gun, but it was from someone in Missouri. 

Michael’s bail is posted for $10,000 that the Story County Sheriff’s Office.
