PHOTOS: “801 day” police ride along

View photos from a ride along with the Ames Police Department in the morning and at night during “801 day” Saturday in Ames.
Community Resource Officer Nate Rivera waves to pedestrians, signaling to cross the street while patrolling in a Utility Terrain Vehicle with Detective Andrej Klaric during “801 day” on Aug. 19, 2023, in Ames. What was once a day for Iowa State University fraternities and sororities to celebrate and party with new members has transitioned away from the Iowa State chapters to a day anyone, of age or not, would participate in, filled with drinking and partying. In 2022, the Ames City Council voted and authorized Ames Municipal Code 17.30, defining a Nuisance Party, along with an increased fine from Aug. 18 to 20 of $650 per resident for a first offense and $855 for a second offense.
