After the August ISU AfterDark was canceled due to widespread cooling system failures on campus, the Student Union Board (SUB) will host the first ISU AfterDark of the semester from 9 p.m. to 1 a.m. Friday in the Memorial Union.
Celebrity guests will include Ryan Bergara, best known for his work with Buzzfeed: Unsolved and Watcher Entertainment, and mentalist Tom Kennedy.
Other attractions will include bingo, karaoke, bowling and trivia, in addition to other activities.
The event is free for ISU students and their guests.
Event organizers Christian Grensteiner and Poni Okene try to start planning ISU AfterDark at least a month in advance.
“[We] have to do this early enough in order to get good guests,” Grensteiner said.
While trying to book guests, Grensteiner and Okene try to find people who are relevant to ISU students. They also acknowledged that the SAG-AFTRA strike has made booking certain celebrity guests difficult.
“We’ve had to get creative,” Grensteiner said.
In addition to making sure they have guests lined up, they also need enough volunteers to cover the event.
According to Okene, SUB needs 12–15 volunteers for each guest, which adds up quickly.
“A lot of work goes into making sure we have people,” Okene said. “We make sure we have volunteers who are always excited to be part of it.”
Grensteiner described ISU AfterDark as a “core memory” for many ISU students.
“[AfterDark] is such a great opportunity to see what ISU has to offer and what the Student Union Board has to offer,” Grensteiner said. “Bring your friends and have fun this Friday.”
If you are interested in joining SUB, applications for executive board positions are on their website until Oct. 23. All students, regardless of major, are encouraged to apply.
