Editors note: The article was corrected to reflect that Thielen has not hired an additional doctor, only initiated the process and that the resolution to recognize the football team was tabled.
Student Government swore in five new senators, confirmed a new director of academic affairs and discussed several pieces of legislation during Wednesday night’s Senate meeting.
Student Government swore in five new United Residents Off-Campus senators:
- Chase Johnson, a junior in accounting
- Ayden James, a freshman in civil engineering
- Lauren Neal, a junior in community and regional planning
- Paige Bailey, a sophomore in political science
- Maria Dugan, a PhD candidate in bioanalytical chemistry
“One initiative I’m excited to share is implementing SafeRide for off-campus students,” Dugan said. “With so many graduate and undergraduate students living off-campus, the lack of accessible transport can hinder participation for on-campus events as well as those held on weekends outside of [CyRide] business hours. The SafeRide program would encourage students to fully engage with our campus community.”
Sen. Maddie Reinhardt, a sophomore in animal science, was sworn in as a College of Agriculture and Life Sciences senator.
The Senate also confirmed Rachel Frost, a junior in political science, as director of academic affairs.
“I think this position is exciting because academics are the reason we come to college in the first place,” Frost said. “The opportunity to have an impact on this crucial part of the Iowa State experience is super exciting.”
$435.01 in funding was approved by the Senate for the Water Polo Club. The funding will cover tournament fees and other costs as the club was invited to a tournament at the University of Missouri.
The Senate also approved a resolution to appreciate Thielen Student Health Center for initiating the hiring of an additional full-time doctor. Thielen Student Health Center comprises 13 medical professionals, including three physician assistants, seven nurse practitioners and three doctors.
The Senate tabled a resolution introduced two weeks ago that would recognize the Iowa State football team for their historic undefeated start to the season. The motion did not carry last week due to concerns about the superstition of congratulating the team midseason.
