The Iowa State women’s golf team has won its first tournament of the year in a dominant performance at the Bama Beach Bash hosted by the University of Alabama Birmingham.
The Cyclones outscored the number two team, UNC Asheville, by 38, which was a larger gap than second-place UNC Asheville to ninth-place UAB.
Iowa State junior Pammy Chookaew tied for the best golfer of the event with Pariya Sanpanawat of Georgia State with a two-under-par performance by both individuals.
Freshman Nichakorn Pinprayoon placed third at two-over-par to aid the Cyclones in their big week. Sophomore Keeley Marx played in the tournament as an independent entry, earning a tie for seventh place, shooting six over par.
Round by round
Iowa State led at the end of the first round at plus 14 as a team. Behind the Cyclones were UNC Asheville and UAB, tied at plus 23 each. Chookaew led the way for Iowa State, shooting two-over-par.
Round two also found the Cyclones in the lead, improving on their big first day. They finished the day 10 strokes better than day one with a four-over-par day, led again by Chookaew.
The Cyclones closed out the tournament with a strong day as the only team to collectively shoot under par for any round. Thanks to a three-under from Chookaew, a four-under-par from Pinprayoon and a one-under-par from junior Karisa Chul-Ak-Sorn, Iowa State grew its lead on the field.
