No. 56 Iowa State lost 4-2 to BYU on the road Thursday afternoon. The Cyclones now sit at 9-8 overall and 3-6 in Big 12 play.
The Cougars added another win to their unbeaten streak versus Iowa State. The all-time record is now 4-0 BYU.
This match was also the first played in Provo, Utah, between the two schools. Prior to 2023-24, Iowa State had only played BYU once in Las Vegas. The two other matches were a home game for the Cyclones and a neutral game in Oklahoma.
BYU’s Yujia Huang and Sue Yan Tan beat Iowa State freshmen Cristina Ramos Sierra and Julia Camblor 6-1 on court No. 2.
The Cougars followed that win on court No. 2 with a win on court No. 1. Kendall Kovick and Chelsea Bluestein topped senior Anna Supapitch Kuearum and freshman Mari Paz Alberto Vilar 6-2 to clinch the doubles point.
Iowa State responded, down 1-0, with the first singles win of the match. Freshman Suzanie Pretorius beat Tan 6-0, 6-2 on court No. 5.
Bluestein gave BYU the lead back with her singles victory. She beat Ramos Sierra 6-4, 6-3 on court No. 4.
BYU’s Grace Levelston extended the Cougars’ lead with her win. She downed No. 73-ranked Kuearum 6-2, 6-3 on court No. 2.
Sophomore Valeska San Martin Ramirez got the Cyclones within one point of BYU. Ramirez beat Madison Smith 7-6, 6-2 on court No. 6.
Huang notched the third and final singles win for BYU, sealing the win for the Cougars. Huang beat Camblor 5-7, 6-0, 6-3.
Iowa State looks to bounce back when it takes on Utah at 12 p.m. Saturday.
