Student Government Director of Governmental Affairs Colby Brandt and Will Vlasek won the Student Government president and vice presidential election by 19 votes in March. In an email interview with the Daily, Brandt expressed upcoming actions and preparation for the following semester and reflected on the election.
Brandt stated the victory came down to “strategic outreach, a clear vision and active student engagement.”
“Ultimately, our commitment to an inclusive and solutions-driven campaign, combined with the dedication of our team and supporters, made the difference in securing this narrow but meaningful win,” Brandt said.
When asked what resonated most with students about his platform, Brandt stated, “We believe what resonated most with students about our platform was our commitment to tangible, student-focused improvements that directly impact their daily lives. Our priorities relating to safety, support, and involvement were all practical, achievable goals that students could see benefiting them personally.”
The inauguration is April 21, and Brandt stated his first step is to build a cabinet. The Student Government cabinet comprises around 15 students who fill various roles such as finance director, ex-officio to the Ame City Council and director of sustainability. “Additionally, we will continue collaborating with university administration to ensure our initiatives, such as improving transportation, enhancing campus safety, and strengthening student engagement are both feasible and effectively implemented. By fostering strong partnerships and assembling a dedicated team, we will lay the foundation for meaningful progress from day one.” Brandt stated.
Brandt said it’s vital for students to know what student government is and how it impacts them.
“We heard a common theme: many students do not know what the Student Government does. Student Government has tremendous opportunities available for students, whether it’s getting involved in a new leadership position, or coming to Student Government for funding,” Brandt stated. “If there is one thing students should know about Student Government, it is this: Student Government has the power to do some awesome things on campus, but we need your help.”
