Rummage RAMPage is returning to Ames at the end of July. The event works by getting donations from the community and reselling them at affordable costs to anyone who wishes to shop.
Rummage RAMPage is unique to Ames and has made an impact on the community by blending sustainability values and offering affordable furnishing options. It keeps useful items out of landfills that are commonly thrown out around the time of year when college students’ leases end. It also benefits non-profit agencies because they send volunteers to run the sale and then share in any profit. The United Way of Story County is the financial distributor of the proceeds from the sale.
The event offers an at-cost pick-up service for donations that are difficult to drop off. According to the City of Ames website, “There are special rates for Iowa State University students, Ames residents, and those outside of Ames (but within Story County). Fee ranges from $15 to $90. Pick-up service is offered on Friday, July 25; Monday, July 28, and Tuesday, July 29.”

The Rummage RAMPage’s environmental protection impact is substantial and makes a difference in the community.
“Over time, Rummage RAMPage has grown into a community resale event, diverting over 100,000 pounds of materials from the landfill annually,” Mark Peebler, the Resource Recovery Assistant Superintendent for the City of Ames, said.
The schedule for the Rummage RAMPage:
- Friday, July 25: Drop-off only; 12 p.m. to 6 p.m.
- Saturday, July 26: Sales and drop-off, 8 a.m. to 6 p.m.
- Sunday, July 27: Sales and drop-off, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.

The City of Ames is putting on the sale with the help of more than 50 organizations, about half of which are Iowa State affiliated.
“We invite everyone to participate—donate, shop, volunteer, or just help spread the word!” Peebler said.
