As the fall semester begins, students should be reminded of several important academic deadlines.
Classes officially began Monday, with the last day to cancel registration having been Sunday. Students looking to add, swap, or drop a course without a withdrawal (W) appearing on their record must do so by Friday. This is also the deadline to change a full-semester course from audit to credit basis.
Shuyang Qu, associate professor in the Department of Agricultural Education and Studies, expressed that missing an add, drop or withdrawal deadline does not necessarily damage a student’s academic record; but can create challenges.
Graduate students must initiate registration by Sept. 8 to avoid a late fee, which is also the last day for all students to elect to audit a course with instructor approval. Advising for spring registration begins Oct. 6, with appointments available to view on Workday.
Interim grades are due by 3 p.m. Oct. 10, and will be available to students in Workday beginning Oct. 18. The last day to withdraw from a full-semester course or adjust grading to pass/not pass without extenuating circumstances is Oct. 31.
“You can still add or drop with your instructor’s and/or your advisor’s approval. It’s just not as convenient as making these changes before the deadline,” Qu said.
Ben Chamberlain, student services specialist, expressed that the most common deadline that students miss is the deadline for adding or dropping a class without instructor permission. After this date, both the instructor and advisor must approve any changes.
“It’s also difficult to catch up when a student adds after the first week, so it’s important for students to be on top of any schedule changes,” Chamberlain said.
Short session class deadlines differ. For first half-semester courses running Monday through Oct. 17, students must add, swap or drop by Friday and may withdraw or change grading by Sept. 26. For second half-semester courses, running Oct. 20 through Dec. 19, the add, swap, or drop deadline is Oct. 24, with the withdrawal and grading deadline on Nov. 21.
To stay on top of these dates, Qu encourages students to rely on consistent reminders.
“Read emails from your advisor and from your department. Have a group of friends that can help each other remember important dates and activities,” Qu said.
Final exams for all students will be held Dec. 15-18, with the semester officially ending Dec. 19.
