Need to Know: Theatre Stuff

The Iowa State Theatre program offers a learning experience in the performing arts to all who audition.

It will go through the 2018-19 performance year with a variety of productions, suiting many different performance types and preferences.

Audition information can be found on the ISU Theatre website, and tickets can be bought online through TicketMaster or the Iowa State Center Ticket Office, or at the Fisher Theatre Box Office before performances.

This is Not a Pipe Dream – Sep. 28 through Oct. 7, 2018

This one act play by Barry Kornhauser is based on artist René Magritte and his dream to become an artist. “This is Not a Pipe Dream” tells the story of a young boy who learns about believing in dreams and trusting the imagination.

When his father dismisses his dream of becoming an artist as a “pipe dream,” Magritte is compelled to succeed in art. Inspired by his father’s words and the passing of his late mother, Magritte begins his career as an artist, and his futuristic style inspires many who view his art.

Orpheus in the Underworld – Nov. 1-4, 2018

With music by Jacques Offenbach, French Libretto by Hector Cremieux and Ludovic Halevy, and English adaptation by Rebecca Renfro Grimes, this comedic opera is Offenbach’s first Greek mythological spin off.

In the legend, Orpheus is pursuing his wife, Eurydice, who was taken to Hades by Pluto. This annoys Jupiter, who assists Orpheus in his quest for his wife. As Orpheus adventures, he encounters many gods, goddesses,and fantasy characters as well as obstacles and hardships.

It’s a Wonderful Life: A Live Radio Play – Nov. 30-Dec. 9, 2018

Once a short story and screenplay, Joe Landry adapted the story for the stage. Similar to an actual radio play, the small cast of four performs a play, with a fifth person as the sound-effects creator.

When a modern man wanders into an old radio station, he finds four ghosts who appear to be straight out of the golden age of radio. Through some conversation and interaction, the man finds that he has been cast in the role of George Bailey, a man who slips into a depressive state after some unfortunate circumstances, but finds help in a unique way.

Barjche Dance Concert – Feb. 8-9, 2019

The Barjche Dance Concert is Iowa State’s Dance Concert that is held every Spring. It is put on by the Department of Kinesiology, specifically Orchesis II, and is an opportunity for students and faculty of all departments to come together and celebrate dance.

Techniques like tap, jazz, ballet, modern dance and more will be showcased.

Sense and Sensibility – Feb. 22-Mar. 3, 2019

This adaptation by Kerry Skram of Jane Austen’s novel is about a late-18th century family and their struggles following the death of the family patriarch, Henry Dashwood. He leaves his estate and belongings to his son John, which leaves his second wife and two daughters homeless and poor.

After hearing about Mrs. Dashwood’s predicament, Sir John Middleton reaches out to help the three women. They move to a home in Barton Park, and what follows is a story of love, drama and family.

Godspell – April 5-14, 2019

This rock opera breaks the mold of how Jesus Christ was treated on stage. Conceived by John-Michael Tebelak, produced by the team of Edgar Lansbury, Stuart Duncan and Joseph Beruh, with music by Stephen Schwartz, Godspell tells about the last days of Jesus Christ alongside the telling of other biblical parables.

The cast improvises with different theatrical devices, props, costumes and scenery to tell the story of the historical Jesus Christ.
