Reality TV is my love language. When life is overwhelming, nothing soothes me quite like watching strangers argue in hot tubs, cry in confessionals or stress-bake under a ticking clock.
Reality television is escapism at its finest, low stakes for us and high drama for them. Honestly, that’s a public service to me.
My top 10 reality TV shows range from glamorous to completely unhinged, heartfelt to hilariously messy. But every single one earns its place.
- Vanderpump Rules + Villa
These shows are proof that putting attractive people in service jobs, adding alcohol and letting unresolved resentment simmer, television magic will happen. Vanderpump Rules thrives on long-running drama, broken friendships and grudges that refuse to die. Vanderpump Villa adds a luxe European setting and high-stakes hospitality chaos. It’s stunning scenery paired with terrible decisions, and it’s impossible to look away, especially with Lisa Vanderpump on the screen.
- The Traitors
If reality TV and a murder mystery had a baby, it would be The Traitors. The mind games, secret alliances and dramatic roundtables make every episode feel tense in the best way. You’ll spend the entire time yelling at your screen because you’re convinced you’d play the game better (you wouldn’t). It’s brilliant, theatrical and deliciously paranoid.
- Love Island
Love Island is pure, sun-soaked chaos. Between surprise recouplings, dramatic exits and contestants declaring love after three days, it’s endlessly entertaining. It’s not meant to be taken seriously, and that’s precisely why it works. This is reality TV as a summer fling, it’s intense, dramatic and over before you know it. Although nothing will compare to Love Island USA season six, I still find each season uniquely drama-filled.
- The Secret Lives of Mormon Wives
This show pulls you in by revealing a world that feels both perfectly polished and surprisingly messy. The drama comes from navigating tradition, marriage and modern expectations, making it fascinating, binge-worthy and occasionally jaw-dropping in ways you don’t see coming. And yes, you will find yourself wondering repeatedly, “Will MomTok survive this?”
- The Great British Bake Off
The calm in the storm. Bake Off is the show you want to watch when you want competition without the cruelty. It’s cozy, charming and filled with people who apologize when they accidentally beat someone — comfort TV at its finest.
- Love is Blind
This show asks an unhinged question: Can you fall in love without seeing someone? And then immediately proves that emotional connections don’t prevent chaos. The engagements are rushed, the reveals are awkward and the weddings feel like social experiments gone rogue. It’s messy, fascinating and a reminder that love may be blind, but red flags are not.
- Jersey Shore
An absolute reality TV institution. Jersey Shore gave us iconic catchphrases, legendary flights and a cast that felt like a chaotic family you somehow cared about. It’s loud, ridiculous and unapologetically over the top. And that’s precisely why it still holds up, even though it ended in 2012.
- RuPaul’s Drag Race
More than a competition, it is a celebration of creativity, resilience and chosen family. Yes, it’s dramatic and meme-worthy, but it’s also deeply emotional and affirming. Between runway looks, lip-sync battles and heartfelt backstories, it balances spectacle with soul better than almost any reality show.
- Project Runway
Project Runway makes creativity feel urgent. Designers are pushed to their limits under impossible timelines, outrageous challenges and the constant threat of elimination. It’s stressful, inspiring and endlessly quotable. I like watching this to reignite my creativity while seeing beautiful looks.
- The Real Housewives
While I have only dipped a toe into the Real Housewives, it’s made my list; that’s how good it is. The blueprint, the golden standard and the reason reality TV is what it is today. The franchise is camp, chaos and conflict perfected. These women argue like it’s an Olympic sport, and every city brings its own flavor of dysfunction. If you think this is mindless, you’re missing the artistry.
Whether you’re looking to laugh, mentally check out or feel slightly better about your own life choices, these shows deliver every time.
