Iowa State suffered a heartbreaking loss against Baylor to open up Big 12 conference play with three losses.
The Cyclones (13-9, 0-3) took on the Bears (17-6, 3-0) in a weekend series. Iowa State dropped both games in a doubleheader on Friday, 8-1 and 4-2.
Game three looked like it would be more of the same, with the Bears jumping to an early 4-0 lead after two innings.
Baylor left fielder Karynton Dawson, who had two extra-base hits in the previous game, hit an RBI (runs battled in) triple and scored on a sacrifice fly in the first inning.
Two RBI singles later and Baylor had all the momentum after two innings; however, the game was suspended and set to resume at noon the following day.
Ava Mullen took the mound for Iowa State after Lauren Schurman surrendered four runs in the first half of the game.
Mullen, gave up three hits and no earned runs the rest of the way.
The Cyclones’ offense also stepped up and scored four in the fifth inning. It started with a double by Hayleigh Oliver to put two runners in scoring position.
McKenna Andrews capitalized with a no-doubt three-run homer to left field for her first of the year.
Back-to-back doubles by Reagan Bartholomew and Karlee Ford evened up the score in Waco as the Cyclones mounted a comeback.
In the seventh inning, the game was tied, and Baylor came up in the bottom of the frame. The Bears had a runner on second and hit a ground ball to second. The runner scored on a throwing error by the first baseman, and Baylor won the ballgame.
Iowa State will travel to Columbia, Missouri, to play in the Missouri Tournament on Friday.
