AMES — The growing warmer temperatures signal the upcoming fall sports season for club sports, including women’s club soccer.
The season for women’s club soccer begins when students arrive on campus in August and runs through late November.
The first step to playing is making the team through tryouts, which are held during the first week of classes in late August. The club offers two days of tryouts, as well as a third for standout players from the first two days. The tryouts are run by coach Bobby Myers and the three co-presidents for that school year.
The tryouts require a $25 fee and participants are asked to bring their own soccer ball, water and cleats.
This competitive environment brings out the best in players and can lead to strong matches and team growth as the season progresses. The team has high expectations and has performed well in past years, clinching six straight appearances at the National Intramural-Recreational Sports Association (NIRSA) National Tournament.
“Qualifying for the regional and national tournament is always the team’s goal and is such an accomplishment when we do hit these goals,” Co-President Daniela Rodriguez said. “As this club continues to grow, our goals only get bigger.”
This program exemplifies excellence and aims to build on its success each season.
“This past season, we have worked really hard to build a strong team culture and continue improving as a club,” Co-Oresident Ella Maier said. “We brought in a lot of new members, each of them bringing lots of energy and talent to the group.”
NIRSA has expanded to two divisions, meaning fewer teams qualify for postseason play. This has increased the level of competition in the regular season, with teams needing to compete in every match.
The best teams that advance in the NIRSA Regional and National Tournaments are those that build strong chemistry on and off the field.
“The women’s soccer club is a great organization at Iowa State,” social media chair Eden Wirtz said. “It allows the team to connect on another level with women of all ages and build a team bond.”
The club emphasizes bringing people together and working toward shared goals, which contributes to its consistent success.
“Our next goal is to advance in the tournament and possibly win a national championship,” Myers said.
