Spoilers Ahead!
I love the story and themes “Jujutsu Kaisen” presents, and I think it is actually a lot better written than people give it credit for. However, sometimes you just need a 27-minute-long episode finale that shows one of the most underrated characters just absolutely kicking ass.
The season final of “Jujutsu Kaisen” delivered everything that I could have ever wanted and more. Following Yuta in the Sendai Colony, this episode is just all action, but it doesn’t sacrifice character moments in doing so.
What makes this episode so good is the development of the antagonist that Yuta goes through here. All of them are so cool and unique, even the throwaway cockroach monster, Kurourushi. If the episode were just this fight, it would still be amazing, but this is the opening fight; it is like the appetizer before the main meal.
What really elevates this episode is the Yuta vs. Uro vs. Ryu match. This three-way fight showcases some of the best animation I have ever seen, a recurring theme with MAPPA this season, but this is easily the best of the season without a doubt.
The way they uniquely handle everyone’s powers so the three-way fight is clear is stunning, and I cannot believe how well they handle Uro’s. Her abilities include folding the space in between objects to create attacks and barriers. It is a pretty high-concept ability that the show pulls off so well.
This three-way fight has one of the coolest moments in recent anime history. The three-way domain expansion is so awesome, and the way they recreate the panel is perfect. Once Uro is defeated, and it is just Yuta vs. Ryu, and the opening song for the season “Aizo” kicks in for the final time, it is hard not to be completely blown away. My jaw dropped for almost the entire episode, and with how much hype was built into this part of the Culling Games, it more than delivered.
Season three of “Jujutsu Kaisen” was one of the best seasons of anime in an incredibly long time. I think the way that they handled this part of the manga was just perfection, and I cannot wait to see how they adapt the rest of it. Unfortunately, it may take longer than expected, as they announced that this would be the season three finale, not the end of part one, so who knows when we will see “Jujutsu Kaisen” again.
I am very glad that it did not end on a cliffhanger, however. There is a montage at the end that sets up the second half of the arc, but they knew better than to end it on a cliffhanger, luckily, and I will be waiting on the edge of my seat to see how they conclude the Culling Games.
10/10
