Iowa State wrestling bolstered its future 125-pound position on Jan. 10.
Rutgers freshman Alex Mackall decided to transfer to Iowa State.
Coming out of Walsh Jesuit High School in Ohio, Mackall earned the No. 71 overall ranking, according to Intermat.

Alex Mackall is transferring from Rutgers to Iowa State! The Austintown, Ohio native was the 120-pound Ohio state champ in 2015 and was the No. 71 overall recruit in his class. He will be eligible to compete for Iowa State next season.— Cyclone Wrestling (@CycloneWR) January 10, 2018
In 2014, Mackall won the Ohio 120-pound State Championship; in 2015, Mackall was runner-up at the state tournament, while being named a high school All-American.
If the 2017-18 season has proven anything, it’s that the Cyclones can’t be too deep at 125 — a weight that’s been decimated with injuries and departures.
After Daniel Vega and Jonathan Marmolejo departed the team, Iowa State was left with walk-on sophomore Jakob Allison. On Jan. 5, Allison suffered a broken hand, sidelining the Waukee, Iowa native for four to six weeks.
Currently, Sinjin Briggs — a walk-on recently added to Iowa State’s roster — is the only healthy 125-pounder on the roster.
