Sigma Gamma Rho celebrate Black Girls Rhock Founder’s Week

Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority is celebrating its 95th year anniversary this week. Founded on November 12, 1922, in Indianapolis, Indiana, by seven young educators, the Theta Psi chapter was chartered May 7th, 1982 by three African-American women at Iowa State.

“This is important because for 13 years, the Iowa State community has been missing Sigma,” said Jasmine Scott, public relations chair of Sigma Gamma Rho. “It’s the time for us to show the community what we’re about and why we are here to stay.”

Starting today, Sigma Gamma Rho will be holding a variety of events this week to celebrate their anniversary. Check out the details of the week’s events here:

Monday, Nov. 6th

Me, Myself, and I

6 p.m. to 8 p.m.

Gallery Room, Memorial Union:

What comes to mind when thinking of what being “healthy” is? Is it physical health? Mental health? The Women’s Health Forum will host panelists and facilitate discussion on what health means to you. Presenters will include certified ACE personal trainer Devin Wilmott, HDFS Ph.D candidate Ebony Williams, licensed mental health therapist Kendrah Parker and Cosette Scallon from Thielen Student Health Center.

Tuesday, Nov. 7th

Why Do Men? Why Do Women?

6 p.m. to 8 p.m., Carver Hall 305

Trying to figure out why people do what they do may be difficult, but an discussion on why men and women do what they do will help facilitate discussions on gender and our actions. Everyone is welcome.

Wednesday Nov 8th

Rhollin’ With Poodles

5:30 p.m. to 8:30 pm, Skate South in Des Moines, Iowa

Come out and enjoy an evening of roller skating with the ladies of Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority Inc. Costs only $1.

Thursday, Nov. 9th

Informational

7 p.m. to 9 p.m., Margaret Sloss Women’s Center

Want to know more about Sigma Gamma Rho? Come out to an informational session at the Sloss House to learn more about the sorority in detail. Business casual dress is required.

Friday, Nov. 10th

My Black is Beautiful

6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Hixson-Lied 0020

The women of Sigma Gamma Rho will be talking beauty regiments, from hair to makeup to skin. The event will also host different booths to visit and free samples of some products will be provided.

Saturday, Nov. 11th

All Black Affair

10 p.m. to 2 a.m., SUV Community Center

Come have fun while also serving the community by joining Sigma Gamma Rho for a party to round out the week. Don’t forget to bring a canned good or nonperishable food item for Sigma Gamma Rho’s food drive. All black attire is required.
