Iowa State men’s basketball earns its first win of the regular season

Iowa State men’s basketball went to Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, for the Puerto Rico Tip-Off and started the tournament off in the right direction with a 104-98 win over Appalachian State. 

It was a team win over the Mountaineers as five Cyclone players finished in double-digit points. Iowa State’s scoring leader for the game was guard Donovan Jackson with 26 points and guard Nick Weiler-Babb was right behind him with 23 points. 

The other three players consisted of: Lindell Wigginton (17 points), Cameron Lard (12 points) and Jeff Beverly (10 points).

Before this win, the highest scoring game for the Cyclones was 59 points against Missouri. The Cyclones lost on Friday night at Missouri and against Milwaukee on Monday night. 

Iowa State also improved its field goal percentage at 51.6 percent and 3-point percentage at 43.5 percent. The Cyclones continued to be aggressive going to the free-throw line 35 times and converting 28 of them (80 percent). 

Along with the shooting improvements, Iowa State committed the fewest turnovers in a game this season with 11 turnovers. 

Iowa State will play the winner of Tulsa and Western Michigan, who will play at 7 p.m. on Thursday night. The Cyclones’ second game will take place at 6 p.m. on Friday night on ESPNU.
