Iowa State men’s basketball has many new faces on the 2017-2018 roster, and those new faces continue to grow into the 2018-2019 season as the Cyclones signed four players today.

These four players make Iowa State rank 26th according to 247Sports for its 2018 recruiting class.

Coach Steve Prohm and the Cyclones coaching staff worked around the Midwest to sign three players in the Chicago area and another in Wisconsin.

“All four of those guys are guys we went after hard and wanted,” Prohm said. “It was great. Iowa State’s atmosphere plays such a big part in [the recruiting process].”

Zion Griffin, the 6-foot-6 small forward, was the first player to commit to Iowa State in the class. The four-star recruit from Darien, Illinois, is ranked fifth in the state of Illinois and 133rd overall, according to 247Sports Composite Rankings.

He averaged 17.3 points per game along with 8.7 rebounds per game at Hinsdale South during his junior year. He chose the Cyclones over Kansas and Pittsburgh.

“It was great to get Zion’s commitment early, kind of got a buzz going a little bit,” Prohm said. “I saw him in AAU and thought he had a chance to do some great things.”

The next player to commit to the Cyclones was 6-foot-5 point guard Tyrese Haliburton from Oshkosh, Wisconsin. He averaged 18 points, six assists and five rebounds as a junior at Oshkosh North High School.

The three-star recruit is ranked fourth in the state of Wisconsin and 150th overall, according to 247Sports Composite Rankings. His big offers, besides Iowa State, came from Minnesota and Cincinnati.

“George had been down [in Ames] for the Baylor game this past season,” Prohm said. “His connection to Iowa State was really big for us to get invested in there and build relationships with his family.”

After Haliburton, Iowa State went back to the Chicago area to sign its last two players. The next player would be George Conditt IV, a 6-foot-10 power forward. The Chicago native averaged 15 points and 12 rebounds as a junior at Corliss High School.

Conditt chose Iowa State over schools like Illinois and New Mexico. He’s a three-star recruit that’s ranked seventh in the state of Illinois and 230th overall, according to 247Sports Composite Rankings.

“He’s a long, really versatile and highly skilled player with a great basketball IQ,” Prohm said. “His IQ is off the charts. He can make threes and as he continues to fill out, he’s got a chance to be a special player.”

Finally, Talen Horton-Tucker was the last commit for Iowa State standing at 6-foot-5. The small forward is from Chicago as well and averaged 18.2 points and seven rebounds playing for Team Rose last summer.

The four-star recruit is ranked fourth in the state of Illinois and 123rd overall, according to 247Sports Composite Rankings. Horton-Tucker reportedly had approximately 20 offers including schools like Illinois, Xavier and Georgia Tech.

“He could sign anywhere and I would’ve thought, ‘Man, that was a good pickup,'” Prohm said in a press release sent on Wednesday. “He’s a good player and he’s got a chance to do some good things.”

Prohm said he’s excited about the upcoming class and knows they can make an impact early in their college careers.

“They each have their own draw,” Prohm said. “I’m excited about those guys and getting them here next June.”
