The fourth in numbers

Ian Steenhoek

The Fourth of July is our nation’s birthday, and boy is it a party. There are cookouts, picnics, fireworks, camping, parties and pride for our nation. Tons of activities means tons of shopping. There are tons of interesting statistics.

For example, did you know that over 80 percent of Americans grill or cook out on the fourth? 33 percent of the 150,000,000 hot dogs consumed on the fourth alone each year are produced in Iowa.

Over 190 million pounds of pork/red meat and over 700 million pounds of chicken are purchased in the week leading up to the fourth as well.

The U.S. also imports $5,000,000 worth of American flags and $247,100,000 worth of fireworks from China each year. Meanwhile the U.S. produces $231,800,000 worth of fireworks.

Over 60 percent of Americans watch firework displays and 23 percent set off their own.
