DubH to dance Friday night away
April 5, 2017
DubH, ISU’s hip-hop dance club, will be performing this Friday at 7 p.m. at the Ames Auditorium. The doors will open at 6 p.m.
DubH is the largest student-run club at Iowa State University with about 500 total members. The club performs throughout the year at Iowa State events, as well as other venues and schools around Ames.
The hip hop season begins with a showcase at the beginning of each semester. Student choreographers perform approximately 30 seconds of the dance they have created for potential club members. Students come to watch and sign up for the dances they want to be a part of.
When it comes to skill level, there is a large variety within the entire program. Anyone can be a part of any dance, and if a person is placed in a dance they do not want to be in they can contact choreographers and switch, so long as there are spots open.
“A lot of people think that they can’t do it if they do not have any dance experience, which is so not true because there are plenty of people who have not danced a day in their life,” said Maddie Schleif, Iowa State student and fourth semester DubH member. “It is just fun.”
The club is completely inclusive and has dances that any person can be a part of. There are choreographed dances that people who have never danced can learn, and even an auditioned group called Innovation that travels and performs.
“Usually there are 15 to 20 dances and all the choreographer’s styles are different, so it is very easy to find one that you think you can do well in, or even one to challenge yourself,” Schleif said.
The club encourages participation, and already has a very goofy and fun atmosphere. It is a great way to branch out and make new friends. Joining the club is an even better way to relieve stress from school while learning new things or refining old skills.
“Everyone just has so much fun,” Schleif said.
This Friday will be the group’s final show for the semester where they will showcase every dance they have been working on. DubH holds a new showcase each spring and fall semester.
