Iowa State (20-32) captured its third straight victory Saturday, taking down Western Illinois (19-28) in a non-conference match up.

The bats were busy early at the Cyclone Sports Complex. Western Illinois got things started in the top of the first inning scoring four runs to jump out to an early lead over the Cyclones.

Iowa State responded with four runs of its own in the home half of the inning. Kaila Konz scored on a wild pitch followed by an RBI single from Megan Schweitzer to score Kirsten Caudle.

Kaylee Bosworth hit a ball deep to left field and two more Cyclone runs came home on an error, tying the game at four.

After a scoreless second inning, Iowa State took its first lead of the game after Bosworth crushed another ball to left field, this time going over the fence for a two-run home run.

The Leathernecks tied things up at six in the top of the fourth and were threatening to take the lead until the Cyclones turned a triple play to get out of the inning.

After a one hour rain delay, action resumed in the fifth inning. Bosworth picked up right where she left off, drilling her second two-run home run of the day to left field.

“I’ve been struggling at the plate lately so it was good to have a good day,” Bosworth said.

The Cyclones would add two more runs in the bottom of the sixth to cap a 10-6 win over the Leathernecks.

Game two of the doubleheader against the Leathernecks was canceled due to weather.

Iowa State will return to action Friday, May 5, at the Cyclone Sports Complex against Kansas. First pitch against the Jayhawks is scheduled for 4 p.m.

“If [Kansas] is going to beat us they’re going to have to earn it,” Jamie Trachsel said. “We are going to make sure we are throwing punches the whole way.”
