Texas Tech softball completes weekend sweep of Cyclones

Texas Tech (16-14, 3-0 Big 12) won both games of the doubleheader against Iowa State (15-19, 0-3 Big 12) on Sunday morning, completing a weekend sweep of the series.

Brianna Weilbacher got the start at pitcher in game two of the series for Iowa State. Weilbacher registered 8 strikeouts against the Lady Raider batters. She currently leads the Big 12 in strikeouts.

Texas Tech stuck first in the top of the second inning. The Lady Raiders added five more runs in the sixth inning to pull away from the Cyclones.

Mandi Moore saw her first action of the season, replacing Weilbacher at pitcher in the seventh inning. Moore struck out the first batter she faced and did not allow a hit in the inning.

Iowa State’s offense finally broke through in the seventh inning, putting two runs on the board.

Despite outhitting Texas Tech 5-3, Iowa State dropped game one, 6-2.

Sami Williams got things started for Iowa State in the final game of the series, blasting a solo home run to center-field in the bottom of the first.

Texas Tech hit a solo home run of its own in the top of the fifth.

Iowa State responded in the bottom half of the inning to regain the lead over Texas Tech.

Iowa State had a one run lead heading into the final inning. The Cyclones had the Lady Raiders down to their final out before Texas Tech hit a 3-run home run to take the lead.

Iowa State would fail to respond in the bottom of the seventh, falling 4-2.

Starting pitcher Savannah Sanders was a bright spot for the Cyclones, striking out nine Red Raiders in the outing.

“I thought Savannah had a great game,” coach Jamie Trachsel said. “She threw her best one of the year.”

Iowa State will return to the Cyclone Sports Complex Wednesday, March 29, to face in-state foe UNI.
