Sidewalks and roads icy, local police departments warn community of conditions

The ice sheets covering Lake LaVerne are visible due to the unusually low amount of snow this winter despite freezing temperatures.

The Iowa State Police Department and the Ames Police Department are advising that Ames and Central Iowa community members drive safe early Tuesday morning.

As of 8 a.m. there is a Winter Weather Advisory in affect for the Ames area until 3 p.m. Tuesday, according to the National Weather Service. 

Rain, snow and freezing rain are possible before 3 p.m. and there is slight chance of freezing rain before 3 p.m. and 4 p.m.

The Ames Police Department has even taken to Twitter to report accidents in the city and road closings.
