An Iowa State student was struck by a vehicle last night in Campustown in a hit-and-run incident, Ames Police reported.

Jason Tuttle, investigations commander for the Ames Police Department, said that police were dispatched to Chamberlain Street at 12:45 a.m. Friday morning, where witness provided the license plates of the driver.

Daniel McCoy, 19, business specials non-degree, was arrested and charged with a hit-and-run and possession of drug paraphernalia, Tuttle said.

The student hit by the car was transported to Mary Greeley Hospital and was later released that morning.

When officers arrived at McCoy’s apartment shortly after researching his plates, Tuttle said that McCoy refused to open the door, and when he did answer the door they smelled burnt marijuana and requested a warrant.

The suspect was arrested at 3:21 a.m., according to the City of Ames Arrest Report.

Tuttle said that it’s hard to say if the two events are correlated.
