Nine safety tips

Olivia Kudla

Although people never think something bad is going to happened to them, it is not a bad idea to be prepared in case something did. Always being aware of your surroundings is and putting down your phone when you walk somewhere are some of many important tips to keeping yourself safe.

Here are a few ways to make yourself less vulnerable and avoid dangerous situations:

  1. Never walk alone at night: They buddy system is your best friend, walking with someone makes you a harder target.
  2. Know your campus’ emergency phone numbers: If you are in immediate danger you should of course dial 911, but for example if you do not feel safe to walk home at night the Help Van can drive you home.
  3. Never go to a party alone: You should always go with at least one friend you know you can trust and will look out for you, and you’ll look out for them. No matter how nice there everyone seems, all it takes is one sketchy person to ruin that.
  4. Avoid drinking in excess or taking drugs: Not being able to control yourself or your surrounding makes you extremely vulnerable.
  5. Carry pepper spray or a whistle: Even though you hope you never have to actually use it, you can find comfort in the fact that you can fight back.
  6. Use locks: Whether its your room, bike, or car lock your doors. Even if you will only be gone for a second, many thefts happen when you leave your door open even for a short period of time.
  7. Look both ways before crossing the street: Sure pedestrians have the right of way in a cross walk, that does not mean there are not careless drivers out there.
  8. Take a self defense class: If you know the right moves to fight off your assailant you will have a better chance of getting away.
  9. Always know your way out: Knowing your exit points can help you escape a situation faster than if you had to find the exit.
