How to throw your best Oscars-themed party

Jacqueline Horsfall

The 88th Academy Awards is this Sunday on ABC and is a great opportunity to get together with friends and throw an Oscar Themed party. These ideas will start off the party on the right foot.

Invite

Before the ceremony, if some haven’t seen one of the movies, watch it. Use online invites at Punchbowl.com and search “The Oscars Online Invitation Collection” to send out fancy personalized invites to your friends.

Oscar Movie Themed Food

Ask friends to bring food for a pot luck to save money. Try concession style foods complete with candy and different types of popcorn with toppings. Add flare to the food by making the Best Picture nominee themed food. Some examples might be gummy bears for “The Revenant”, Rocky Road ice cream for “Mad Max”, Pay Day candy bars for “The Big Short”, spaghetti for “Brooklyn” and “mars-tini’s” for “The Martian”.

Games

Cast ballots and guess who is going to win for each category. The person with the most correct answers can win a prize such as money or a DVD. Use the Official Oscars Challenge online on the Academy Awards website. Every correct answer picked, the more chances to win prizes. The person who picks the most correct answers can be selected to win a trip to Hollywood for the 89th Academy Awards.

Attire

All the celebs will be dressing up; you can too. Break out old prom dresses and tuxedos to celebrate the Oscars.

Décor

The Academy Awards always have elaborate decorations along with different themes every year. Buy or borrow a red carpet for people to walk on, draw and cut out Oscar statuettes with peoples names, blow up some balloons and pin up movie posters to set the scene.

Photo Op

A big part of the Oscars is the red carpet beforehand where the celebrities pose for the paparazzi. Break out the selfie stick and create an area to take pictures in your fancy outfits.

The Oscars are Sunday, with red carpet coverage at 6 p.m. central and the ceremony 7:30 p.m. central time
