Iowa State fell to Ball State 6-4 in extra innings in its final game of the Hilton Houston Plaza Invitational.

ISU start the scoring in the 2nd inning when Sally Woolpert saw a 1-0 fastball and crushed it left field for a 2-run home run. The Cyclones would score again after a couple of RBI singles in the 4th made the score 4-1 heading into the top of the 5th.

Ball State would start to mount its comeback with one run in the 4th after a home run from Cardinal outfielder Rachel Houck. Then Ball State added two more runs in the 6th off another Cardinal home run, this time hit by shortstop Emily Dabkowski.

Ball State would hit the game-tying home run in the top of the 7th and that would be the end of Savannah Sanders’ day, allowing four runs on eight hits over 6.1 innings. Emma Hylen would replace her in relief.

Cyclones would go scoreless in the bottom of the 7th and the game would go into extra innings where Iowa State would commit two costly errors, allowing two runs. Ball State had their first lead of the game at 6-4, and wouldn’t lose it.

Kelsey Schifferdecker, who entered the game late in the 3rd inning in relief of starter Nicole Steinbeck, was lights out shutting down Iowa State’s late comeback attempt.

Ball State improves to 4-6 on the season, while Iowa State falls to 7-3 and comes away with a split on the weekend.

Sanders received a no-decision on the day, while Hylen takes the loss, even though none of the runs Ball State scored in the 8th were earned.
