Overtime hasn’t been very kind to the ISU women’s basketball team over the past few days.

After falling to Texas Tech in overtime Sunday, Iowa State (11-6, 3-3 Big 12) fell to Oklahoma State (14-4, 4-3 Big 12) in overtime, 79-76, in Stillwater, Okla., on Wednesday night.

The first half started out as a back-and-forth contest with the lead switching hands throughout the first 20 minutes. Oklahoma State went on a 9-2 run late in the second quarter to take a 29-24 lead with just more than two minutes to go in the half.

But Iowa State countered with a run of its own. The Cyclones went into halftime on an 8-0 run and a 32-29 lead.

Freshman Bridget Carleton had herself an impressive first half, just finishing shy of a double-double through 20 minutes with 10 points and eight rebounds.

It was another close third quarter, as the Cowgirls out-scored the Cyclones 13-11, but still trailed, 46-42.

Oklahoma State started to get hot in the final quarter. The Cowgirls jumped out to a 7-0 run and took a 49-46 lead with 7:05 left in the game. Oklahoma State kept up its hot shooting and jumped to a 61-52 lead, the largest of the game, with 2:05 left.

But Iowa State came charging back.

The Cyclones hit three 3-pointers to pull within three points with just under 20 seconds to go. Iowa State’s Seanna Johnson shot a desperation heave to try and tie the game, but was fouled. She hit all three of her free throws to send the game to overtime, tied at 66.

The Cowgirls jumped to a four-point lead early in overtime and just kept the Cyclones at bay despite their best attempts to pull ahead.

Iowa State will come home Saturday to play No. 4 Baylor at Hilton Coliseum at 12:30 p.m.
