Week 2 Big 12 women’s basketball power rankings: Texas takes top spot, Iowa State jumps to 5th

Oklahoma State coach Jim Littell yells at a referee after a call in the second half against Iowa State on Jan. 31. Oklahoma State defeated Iowa State 63-62.

1. (Up 1 spot) No. 4 Texas (13-0, 2-0 Big 12)

Big wins: No. 12 Tennessee, No. 9 Stanford, No. 7 Mississippi State

Big losses: None

The Longhorns are no joke, nor are they ever. They boast wins over three top-15 teams and a pair of wins to open conference play. The success is mostly attributed to size, as it ranks third in the Big 12 with 44.5 rebounds per game. The team’s size is led 6-foot-7 forward Imani Boyette, who sits in fifth in rebounds per game in the Big 12.

2. (Down 1 spot) No. 6 Baylor (14-1, 1-1 Big 12)

Big wins: No. 17 Oklahoma, No. 22 South Florida, Miami

Big losses: Oklahoma State

Sure, the Bears dropped its Big 12 opener against Oklahoma State last Wednesday. And sure, Baylor dropped a couple of spots in this week’s AP Top 25 Poll. But don’t let that fool you. Baylor is once against one of the best teams in the nation, and it proved that with a 78-67 win over No. 17 Oklahoma on Sunday.

3. (Up 1 spot) Oklahoma State (11-2, 1-1 Big 12)

Big wins: No. 6 Baylor

Big losses: Iowa State, No. 22 South Florida

Oklahoma State knocked off No. 4 Baylor last Wednesday in the Big 12 opener. But the Cowgirls couldn’t follow that performance, losing to Iowa State on Saturday. Despite not beating any amazing teams, a win against the then-No. 4 Bears gives Oklahoma State a huge leg up. Plus, it has one the best players in the nation in Brittney Martin. That helps.

4. (Down 1 spot) No. 17 Oklahoma (10-3, 1-1 Big 12)

Big wins: Washington, Boston College

Big losses: No. 12 Texas A&M, North Texas

The big shocker in these rankings: Oklahoma State above Oklahoma. Let me explain — Oklahoma has lost both of its games against ranked opponents and dropped an ugly one against North Texas early in the season. Although a win against Washington, which is receiving votes, is nice, it still doesn’t warrant a spot in the top three.

5. (Up 2 spots) Iowa State (10-3, 2-0 Big 12)

Big wins: Iowa, Oklahoma State

Big losses: Drake, Idaho

Man, the Cyclones have rebounded after a rough November. After dropping three games in a four-game stretch to end November, Iowa State flipped the page and is now in the midst of an eight-game win streak. The Cyclones also knocked off a ranked Iowa in Ames on Dec. 11, giving them a reputable win in the successful December.

6. (Down 1 spot) TCU (10-3, 2-0 Big 12)

Big wins: Kansas State, Texas Tech

Big losses: Butler, No. 12 Texas A&M

TCU’s losses this season haven’t been bad: No. 3 Notre Dame, No. 12 Texas A&M and Butler, which is a tough squad. But they haven’t beaten any reputable teams, which hurts them. The Horned Frogs are just inches away from the Cyclones in this one.

7. (Up 1 spot) West Virginia (12-3, 1-1 Big 12)

Big wins: Elon, Indiana

Big losses: Gonzaga, Southern California

It may seem like wins against Elon and Indiana aren’t the greatest wins in the world, but both of those opponents rank in the top 100 in the NCAA’s Ratings Percentage Index. Gonzaga and Southern California aren’t bad losses by any means, but West Virginia needs to show a little more to move up.

8. (Down 2 spots) Kansas State (10-3, 0-2 Big 12)

Big wins: South Dakota

Big losses: TCU, Iowa State

The Wildcats haven’t started the Big 12 in smooth fashion, dropping both games so far, but its hard not to give them a slight break on the season. They took on No. 1 UConn early in the season and lost by 40. No team has even got close to the Huskies this season, so it’s hard not to give the Wildcats a pass on that. Regardless, Kansas State doesn’t have many impressive wins to warrant a higher rank.

9. (Same) Texas Tech (9-4, 0-2 Big 12)

Big wins: Abilene Christian, Idaho

Big losses: Santa Clara, TCU

Don’t be fooled, a win against Abilene Christian — which is in Abilene, Texas, by the way — is a good one. The Wildcats rank 10th in the NCAA in the Ratings Percentage Index and are 10-2 on the season. But a loss to TCU and a huge 22-point defeat to then-No. 5 Texas are huge red flags. Even then, the Red Raiders are on the same field as Kansas State.

10. (Same) Kansas (5-8, 0-2 Big 12)

Big wins: Memphis

Big losses: Missouri-Kansas City, Oral Roberts

The Kansas women, unlike their men counterpart, have struggled to open the season. The Jayhawks are in the middle of a four-game losing streak and have lost six of their last seven. It may be a long season for Kansas, as it hasn’t even played the tough Big 12 teams yet.
