The ISU women’s basketball couldn’t turn around its recent woes in Big 12 play Wednesday night against TCU (12-8, 4-5 Big 12), falling to the Horned Frogs, 72-62, at Hilton Coliseum. It was the team’s fourth straight loss.

Iowa State (11-8, 3-5 Big 12) started the game in sloppy fashion, turning the ball over five times in the first quarter. But it didn’t seem to hinder the Cyclones, as they went into the first intermission with a 14-12 lead.

ISU guard Seanna Johnson started the game for the Cyclones despite battling a left knee injury that she sustained Saturday. She wasn’t her normal self, though, hardly attacking the basket with the same force and ferocity.

In the second quarter, Johnson only had one point — a free throw. She finished the game with three points on 1-of-9 shooting. Her offensive absence showed, as the Cyclones conceded a 17-2 run to end the first half. TCU led 38-28 at halftime.

The Horned Frogs didn’t have a dominant run like it did in the second quarter, but they did keep a double-digit lead throughout the second half. Iowa State wasn’t helping slice into the lead, only shooting 30.3 percent in the last 20 minutes.

The poor shooting couldn’t be attributing to freshman Bridget Carleton. Carleton led the Cyclones with 23 points in the game, 19 of them in the second half. But her hot shooting wasn’t enough for Iowa State to mount a serious comeback, as TCU kept the Cyclones at arm’s length throughout the fourth quarter.

The Cyclones shot 30.8 percent in the game and only 24.1 percent from 3-point range.
