Big 12 week 1 picks: New year, new conference season

Redshirt junior guard Jameel McKay tangles with some Oklahoma players during the game against No. 15 Oklahoma at Hilton Coliseum on March 2. The No. 17 Cyclones defeated the Sooners 77-70 after a rocky 18-point first half.

Welcome to 2016 and, more importantly, welcome to Big 12 basketball. The Big 12 is perhaps the top basketball conference in the country and the fun is about to begin.

Men’s basketball beat writers Ryan Young and Chris Wolff will be picking every Big 12 game this year, starting with week one, which begins Saturday. Here are their week one picks:

Jan. 2

West Virginia at Kansas State

Ryan: I’m feeling a West Virginia road win to get conference play started. Not entirely sure why, but mark my words — It’ll happen.

Chris: West Virginia is too good and too fast. I’ll take the Mountaineers on the road.

Texas at Texas Tech

Ryan: While the Longhorns can play well in stretches — as clearly shown against then-No. 3 North Carolina a few weeks ago — I still have a lot of questions about this season’s Texas team. I’ll give this one to the Red Raiders.

Chris: Texas Tech has the better record at 10-1, but the Red Raiders haven’t played anyone this year. At 8-4, Texas had a rough non-conference schedule, but I think it exposes Texas Tech, even without Cameron Ridley.

TCU at Oklahoma State

Ryan: I’ll give this to Oklahoma State. Why? It’s the home team. That’s my only logic here, and I’m sticking to it.

Chris: Oklahoma State at home gets a win against TCU, which, like Texas Tech, has yet to prove anything.

Baylor at Kansas

Ryan: Even though I think Baylor has all of the pieces to be in the running for the conference title, the Bears will stumble out of the gate. Kansas is, right now, the best team in the country.

Chris: Kansas hasn’t won 11 straight regular season conference titles by accident. The Jayhawks win at home and they beat teams they are supposed to beat. They do that again to start 2016.

Iowa State at Oklahoma

Ryan: While it’ll be close, Oklahoma is playing as good as anyone in the country right now. The Cyclones won’t be able to snag a win down in Norman, Okla., this time.

Chris: I thought about the upset pick here, but I just don’t see it happening. Iowa State will have to score key road wins against top teams to make a conference title run, but I think Oklahoma holds serve on its home court this time around.

Jan. 4

West Virginia at TCU

Ryan: TCU hasn’t impressed me so far this season and has lost in almost every true test it’s had so far. West Virginia gets the win here.

Chris: I have no faith in TCU and a lot of love for Bob Huggins, so give me West Virginia on the road.

Oklahoma at Kansas

Ryan: While they both will make it out of their first conference games alive, I’m giving this one to Kansas. The Jayhawks will hand the Sooners their first loss of the season and survive their difficult start to Big 12 play.

Chris: Oklahoma sends a message by knocking off the Jayhawks in their own backyard and puts the Sooners in the driver’s seat early in conference play.

Jan. 5

Kansas State at Texas

Ryan: After falling to West Virginia in game one, I’m thinking the Wildcats will bounce back and beat the Longhorns on the road.

Chris: No Cameron Ridley, no problem. Texas finds a way to win at home.

Oklahoma State at Baylor

Ryan: Baylor should bounce back from its opening loss to Kansas, putting teh Bears right back on track.

Chris: Baylor is the superior team and playing at home after a loss to Kansas. I’ll take the Bears to bounce back in a big way.

Jan. 6

Texas Tech at Iowa State

Ryan: Iowa State should recover nicely from its opening loss to Oklahoma and take care of business in its conference home opener.

Chris: Iowa State rarely loses at home. The Cyclones won’t drop to 0-2 in Big 12 play, especially not against a Big 12 bottom feeder.

Jan. 9

Oklahoma State at West Virginia

Ryan: After a two-game road stretch to open up conference play, the Mountaineers should come out firing at home. They get this one.

Chris: I picked West Virginia twice on the road already, so I’m going to pick it at home as well. I’m high on the Mountaineers.

Baylor at Iowa State

Ryan: While it’ll be a close one, I think the home-court advantage gives the Cyclones the edge here.

Chris: If Iowa State beats Oklahoma and Texas Tech, I think it ends up dropping this one. But since I picked the Sooners to beat the Cyclones, I think Iowa State gets in the zone and handles Baylor at home.

Kansas State at Oklahoma

Ryan: While Kansas State has the pieces to pull off an upset win of this level, it won’t happen now. Oklahoma takes this one, keeping its hot streak alive.

Chris: Oklahoma keeps rolling against the Wildcats.

Texas at TCU

Ryan: I have to give Texas at least one win in the opening week, right?

Chris: I don’t imagine I’ll be taking TCU a whole lot this year, and I’m not picking it here. The Longhorns get a win.

Kansas at Texas Tech

Ryan: Kansas will take this one, making it back-to-back losses for the Red Raiders.

Chris: We round out the week with a snoozer. Kansas wins easily on the road against Texas Tech.
