Get trendy with avocados

Alexa Weber

Besides having more potassium than a banana and being one of just a handful of high-protein fruits, avocados make excellent beauty and health products.

First, let’s get one thing straight — not only are avocados full of antioxidants, amino acids and protein, they are so delicious. Don’t believe it? Add a kick to the traditional BLT by sneaking in some avocado slices. Not only will the protein help keep energy levels higher throughout the day but it will be a wonder as to how many things you can make with avocados.

Hint: The limit does not exist.

Not only can delicious food be made with these wonderful fruits — well technically, they are berries — there are so many do-it-yourself beauty products to be made with avocados.

Avocado and coconut deep conditioner is the perfect solution for dry and brittle hair, especially with the cold weather sneaking up. Simply mash one avocado with coconut milk to a desired consistency and work through wet, clean hair. Wrap hair with a warm towel for about 5 minutes. Rinse, and enjoy soft, lush hair. Not only does dry winter weather make hair brittle, it also makes skin dryer and unbalanced. With a few simple ingredients and only 10 minutes of time, dry skin will feel healthy and soft once again. Here’s the recipe from Freut Cake:

  • 1/2 ripe avocado
  • 1 whole egg
  • 1 tablespoon Greek yogurt
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 tablespoon coconut oil, which is optional but highly encouraged

Just throw all of the ingredients into a blender and blend for 30 seconds. Massage onto clean skin and leave on for 10 minutes or until the mask begins to tighten and dry.

Rinse with warm water, and then apply simple face moisturizer. It’s the perfect solution for dry winter skin for cheap.

Who doesn’t want to pamper themselves every once in a while? This foot scrub from Your Beauty Blog takes a bit longer to prepare, but it offers an amazing and moisturizing spa-day routine. You will need:

  • 1 avocado pit, but let it dry out for two days
  • 1/2 avocado
  • 1/4 cup cornmeal
  • 1 tablespoon sea salt
  • Coffee grinder or something that can grind the pit

After the pit has dried out for a few days, break it up into small pieces. Then with a coffee grinder grind the pit further until it is gritty. Mash the avocado with the cornmeal and add 1/4 cup of the pit powder with the sea salt. Massage feet and enjoy much-needed “you” time.

Avocados never disappoint. Especially on a college budget, these fruits will become any student’s best friend.
