The ISU women’s basketball team started its season on the right foot against Hampton on Friday night at Hilton Coliseum, coasting on the 3-point ball to lead it to a 95-59 victory.

Iowa State shot 12-for-24 from beyond the arc, which accounted for about a third of its points.

Like in the previous two exhibition games, Iowa State struggled to knock down shots with any consistency until late in the first quarter. The Cyclones led 18-17 heading into the first break.

But the Cyclones would separate themselves from the Pirates in the second quarter, while more than doubling their first-quarter scoring total.

Bridget Carleton knocked down a 3-pointer with 3:47 left in the half, sparking a string of five straight long balls to put Iowa State up 47-29 at halftime.

Iowa State would keep up its hot shooting in the second half, partly thanks to Carleton, who set the Iowa State’s scoring record in a debut with 28 points. The previous record was held but Bryanna Fernstrom, who put up 25 last season.

The Cyclones out-scored the Pirates 18-14 in the fourth quarter to finish off the game.

The Cyclones will travel to Drake on Sunday for a 2 p.m. tipoff against the Bulldogs.
