The National Weather Service in Des Moines has issued a Winter Storm Warning, which includes Ames and Iowa State, starting Friday afternoon.

The first winter storm of the year will move across Iowa starting midday Friday and Friday night through Saturday morning.

In addition, wind chills will be near zero over northern Iowa by daybreak Saturday.

Snow accumulations across Iowa will vary from 5 to 9 inches. Winds of 15 to 25 mph during the snow may produce minor blowing and drifting, and also help contribute to visibilities under a mile during periods of heavier snow.

A Winter Storm Warning for heavy snow means severe winter weather conditions are expected or occurring. Significant amounts of snow are forecast that will make travel dangerous. Only travel in an emergency and if you must travel, keep an extra flashlight, food and water in your vehicle in case of an emergency.
