Running tips for beginners

Erin Dungan

While many students don’t have a love for running, tips below can help inspire those who desire to someday enjoy running rather than dread it.

1. Talk to others about running: telling a goal to other or posting it online ensures it is more likely to be accomplished

2. Give yourself a reason to run: run for a charity or lost bet, you’re less likely to quit.

3. Invest in comfortable jogging clothes and shoes: nothing ruins a run like blistering feet

4. Stay positive: finish runs feeling strong and happy, it’ll make you crave more.

5. Get lithe: use a foam roller three times a week to improve flexibility!

6. Layer less: always dress to run like it’s 10 to 15 degrees cooler than it is.

7. Train smart: mix easy days with tough. Know when it’s time for a break!

8. Down a cup of coffee: it’s been proven that seasoned runners experience better workouts when doing so. It helps the body burn calories more efficiently.

9. Mind the incline: accelerating down a hill can destroy runners’ knees.

10. Be a social runner: having a running group or partner can be motivational.
