Bending the rules

The ISU football team has found a different way to keep its players in tip-top shape rather than the conventional “running them until they puke.”

Yoga was at the forefront of talks after Wednesday’s football practice. Redshirt junior receiver D’Vario Montgomery said that it helped him lose 30 pounds while making him more flexible and agile.

At the start of the training, it was recommended because of injury issues and problems with the team’s flexibility.

“It was medically recommended,” said ISU head coach Paul Rhoads. “We have a great program that analyzes movement and inflexibility and we were addressing some medical issues we had with some kids.”

What it ended up helping was the team’s overall performance, especially the wide receivers. For them, it was important to improve flexibility and remain strong while playing through the bumps and bruises of a college football season.

“All of our guys did some yoga,” said ISU wide receiver coach Tommy Mangino. “I think it’s helped everybody. We also like our guys to be loose and be limber and be able to play with bad knees and that’s helped a bunch.”
