A small explosion occurred at University Towers, on the corner of Lynn Avenue and Chamberlain Street on Monday at approximately 1 p.m.

According to a press release by the City of Ames, firefighters discovered a small fire on the second floor where the pool was being remodeled. While smoke filled up the stairwells, residents were evacuated from the building.

Three days before, construction workers filled the pool with a foam substance and concrete. While working, the explosion formed between layers of the foam and concrete. The cause of the fire is still under investigation.

Shift commander Doug Allen and his team filled the pool with water to cool off excess heat, Allen said.

While one construction worker was transported with a minor leg injury, no one else was injured.

After police were finished on the scene, they were handing it back to construction workers to continue.

Claire Hanson, resident of University Tower said she felt the explosion.

“I was in my room on my computer and felt a boom and a shake the sirens went off and I came down,” Hanson said.

Allen says there are no expectations for another explosion.
