Older adults keep touting the importance of a skin-care routine at a young age.

Facial skin is incredibly sensitive and can wrinkle easily, especially when summers are spent at the beach in the sun playing in the sand and winters are spent freezing in the snow and ice.

Starting with a skin-care kit can be helpful when beginning a skin-care routine. The basic items in a skin-care routine, in order of use, are: cleansing wash, exfoliating scrub, toner, morning face lotion, makeup remover, eye cream and night cream. You should also add sunscreen.

Starting out, a student doesn’t need to jump into all of these products because a longer skin-care routine can cause some to skip out and stop following it all together.

As a beginner, try using makeup remover and lotion. Remove all makeup before going to sleep. Keeping makeup on your face overnight can cause your skin to dry out. After removing makeup, which is normally harsh on skin, restore your skin’s moisture with a face lotion. Face lotions come in all shapes, sizes and price points.

If students want to raise the bar on their skin-care routine, add in a night cream and a cleansing wash. The cleansing wash can be used once a student has applied makeup remover to further remove dirt and oils from the skin. Night creams are usually thicker and can help lock in the skin’s natural moisture overnight.

The last thing to add would be an exfoliating scrub and toner. Exfoliating scrubs are useful for removing dead skin cells from the face and body. Using an exfoliating scrub once a week to remove dead skin can lead to a healthier looking face and will keep the skin soft. Toners are used after cleansing and help restore the natural pH balance of the skin that the cleansers might have thrown off-balance.

Sunscreen is the final step but one of the most important. In the summer, sunscreen can protect from burns to the face that ruin the skin’s surface. Finding a sunscreen made for the face, or a moisturizer or foundation with SPF included, will lead to a life of healthier skin.
