Standing on the block during a free-throw attempt, ISU forward transfer Deonte Burton shouted to the crowd, “I am the real MVP.”

On Sunday, Burton took himself and the rest of the Hannah Homes team from just narrowly making the playoffs to winning the championship.

During the July 10 quarterfinal matchup against Capital Orthopedics, Burton put up an impressive 36 points, 14 rebounds and six assists in a close-fought game until Hannah Homes pulled away to win 117-107.

With Hannah Homes beating Capital Orthopedics, Burton and the rest of the Hannah Homes team would face the No. 1 seed, ADIO Chiropractics, who was led by senior ISU forward Georges Niang. The semi-final matchup against ADIO was a hard-fought game, as each team traded blows.

With the game tied at 120 apiece and five seconds on the clock, Burton’s ISU teammate Hallice Cooke took it coast to coast to score the game-winning basket.

“You know it is a team sport,” Burton said. “We wouldn’t probably be here if we didn’t have Hallice.”

Burton scored 49 points and tallied 12 rebounds while sinking nine 3-pointers against ADIO.

With no time to rest, Hannah Homes faced Phoenix Renewables and Monté Morris.

Hannah Homes controlled the entire game against Phoenix Renewables. Burton put up, once again, impressive numbers in a 112-92 win against Phoenix Renewables, dropping 52 points and 12 rebounds on championship Sunday.

Burton scored a combined 101 points in the semifinals and finals.

After the finale, Cooke had high praise for Burton.

“He put this team on his back, do not forget that,” Cooke said.

The Capital City League trophy was not the only thing gold Burton possessed on Sunday.

During the games, Burton’s title matched his red and gold LeBron shoes he was showing off to the crowd.

“I wore these because I wanted to get LeBron a ring in which he deserves and I did,” Burton said.

LeBron James and the rest of the Cleveland Cavaliers were defeated in six games by the Golden State Warriors in the NBA Finals.

Now with the 2015 YMCA Capital City League in the books, Burton will attempt to bring the wow factor he showed in the summer league to his first season with the Cyclones.
