Current events that happened recently that shouldn’t have:

Indiana pizzeria openly refuses to cater same-sex marriage. A Christian family-owned pizzeria in Indiana told media outlets that they refused to cater same-sex marriage ceremonies. It’s 2015; why are gay rights issues still such a huge problem for our society? It’s one thing to actively reject catering to same-sex weddings, but to tell the media your stance on the subject just seemed like they were asking for trouble. Of course, Internet backlash forced them to shut down and the LGBT community is beginning to come under fire for threats and bullying. This situation kind of sucks for everyone involved, as it seems that nobody is really doing anything productive about an outcome.

South Carolina officer charged with murder of fleeing, unarmed black man. A white police officer was filmed gunning down a black, unarmed man fleeing from the scene. The man was killed, and after the video of the incident surfaced, the officer was charged with his murder. It seems like we see news of police brutality nearly every month, if not more frequently, and it’s very disheartening to watch how the issue can divide people. Police brutality shouldn’t be as big of an issue as it is, but with technology, social media and instant Internet access, it will be hard for this kind of thing to continue to go unchecked.

Gunmen open fire at Tunis Museum. A total of 21 people were killed and more than 40 wounded by gunfire after a terrorist cell open fired at a museum in Tunisia last month. While not proven, many speculated that ISIS was responsible after this latest attack came after a string of terrorist activity that the group has typically taken responsibility for. Unfortunately, terrorist attacks will probably be prevalent around the world for the foreseeable future and is not something that can be changed by passing a bill or implementing safer laws. But as for discrimination against gays, or outright police brutality, these kinds of issues are things that we can, and should, work to put behind us.
