Letter: Protect the valuable trees in our community

David Brenner, Agronomy Department, P&S

The enormous sycamore tree near the intersection of Lincoln Way and University Boulevard is an iconic focal point of campus, and it is at risk. It is a joy to look at, at its best in spring with emerging leaves, especially from the west with late afternoon light and a dark sky to the east. However, the view from the east is compromised by weedy trees that should be thinned. These weedy trees are growing into the sycamore’s lower branches, competing with them and diminishing the tree’s visual impact.

The recent kerfuffle about the sacrifice of two fine trees in order to build a new dormitory by Buchanan Hall is an opportunity to recognize, protect and rejoice in great trees that are not for sacrifice. There are other great trees on nearby university land that need help. The trees of “Sycamore row” by the historic Dinky Railroad bed bike-path by 6th Street have been neglected to the point of decline. Sycamore row should be weeded and celebrated. The spreading oak trees near the intersection of Lincoln Way and North Riverside Drive are also on university land, are very visible and have the same need of weeding. We are fortunate to have these magnificent trees. I hope that Iowa State will speak for the trees and protect them.
